It is time to start treating concussions differently.
If you visit the Emergency Room with a concussion, you will likely be told to go home, don't sleep, and have someone watch you. This is because a concussion is generally self-limiting, and if you don't deteriorate in the first 24 hours, you will live.
What you don't know is that your brain is merely adapting to the injury it sustained, much like you adapt to a sprained ankle by compensating with other musculature.
This treatment protocol is based on the idea that neural tissue does not regenerate. However, recent studies have shown that damaged neural tissue can, in fact, be repaired, albeit at a slow rate compared to other tissues.
With this in mind, wouldn't it be better to treat brain injuries proactively to reduce the severity and amount of damage? We believe it should be the only way concussions and other traumatic brain injuries are treated.
